Microsoft vs Google: 3D MappingI’ve been a stalwart of Google’s Virtual Earth (esp. version 4-beta), but I have to at least keep my mind open to alternatives, if and when they exist. So word comes out that Microsoft has finally posted their version, obviously a shot across Google’s bow. It’s nice. Very nice. However, I haven’t had time to fly over the entire planet, or even half as many places as I’ve “visited” (virtually) using Google’s VE. Comparing just my little hometown area (Virginia Beach, VA), I have noticed that many of the areas are using photos that are pretty old. In some cases at least 10 years old. I know that none of these 3D map tools are equipped with brand new photos, but just within my city, I’d guess that the ratio is like 80% Google, versus 50% Microsoft (in terms of accurate, up-to-date imaging). Oh well. I’ll keep beating on it and post a follow-up.
