What’s Not to like about Vista?
I already jabbered on about new goodies and (improved) things worth noting about Vista. Now it’s time to rant on what’s not to like.
- The UI changes to Explorer (not IE). There are a few (very few) nice improvements, but it’s more like 5 steps forward, 4 steps back. They should have focused on simply adding new goodies to the XP version and not rebuilt it to confuse everyone. The way it handles typing UNC paths into the address bar is weird. The logical-vs-virtual folder list panel is confusing (you’ll end up clicking the button to show the logical folder tree like in XP). Just plain stupid. There are no justifiable reasons for making *that* many changes. It’s an achilles heal.
- UI changes to familiar things like Control Panel and applets within it. Add/Remove Programs is split up into install/modify/remove. Network config is split from network connections. CON-FUSE-ING.
- The Aero shell. Ok, if one more person has an orgasm over it I’m going to cut off their Kleenex supply and watch them squirm around in agony. OSX had it first. And they (Apple) had it out there for a looooooooooooooooong time. Shut up. On top of that, the gain of dynamic and transparent features is simply not worth me running out to by a new system with a beefier graphics card. I’ll run it in “plain” (aka boring) mode, thank you.
- As of RC2 it still has issues with applications that it shouldn’t have. FrontPage 2003 for one. Even with SP2 installed, it crashes EVERY SINGLE TIME I use the file dialog box to set a hyperlink or insert a graphic, etc. into a web page. The dialog DLL calls are obviously not playing well with Vista’s version of the DLL.
- Parental Controls in Vista are fanastic, in workgroup mode. However, they are disabled with you join a computer to a domain. Ok, I can “sort of” understand the logic here, but it’s something that should’nt be completed cut off from an admin to enable if they want. As it stands in RC2, you have to configure/enabled it via GPO from the domain. The local instance is completely turned off.
- Price. The pricing schedule Microsoft announced looks a bit aloof to me (and most people I know)
