Claymation Rules. CG Drools

Yes. You hear right. Alreety. Alrighty then. This classic old FZ video for “City of Tiny Lights” is a bit long, but for the time period it was definitely waaaaaaay ahead of its time. It still blows CG away. Not just technically or w/rt to complexity, but inventiveness and imagination. Amazing.

Forgotten, but not Gone

I’m talking about the video clip, not the drummers. Good God almighty. I could eschew the virtues of various drummers ad nauseum, but who cares. These are three OF the finest to have ever lived (and still be alive, lucky us). Yes, there are others which deserve accolades. This is but one snippet of but three who are quite simply: astounding. If after watching this to the end you don’t say “Holy fucking shit!” you’re either clueless or stupid or deaf (and blind).

I really shouldn’t play favorites. I like them all: Vinnie, Dave and Steve. But in this one instance, I think I get the most bang out of Steve Gadd’s chops and backbeat snare and bass grooves. Holy crap.

City of Tiny Lights

I just got home from the “Zappa Plays Zappa” concert/show at the NorVa tonight. Astounding. Simply amazing. They covered a lot of material. Uncle Remus, Peaches en Regalia, Wind up working in a Gas Station, City of Tiny Lights, Dumb All Over, Yellow Snow, Cosmik Debris, The Illinois Enema Bandit, He Used to Cut the Grass, Joe’s Garage, Packard Goose, you name it. If the show is coming to somewhere near you, go see it.

Net Radio is a Dead Man Walking

Well, it looks like the courts don’t see any need to keep the CRB and SoundExchange in line with reality. This article spells it out pretty clear. By this time next year, most net radio “stations” will be broadcast from outside the US. Stupid. The revenue potential (advertising) being ignored is dumbfounding. I can’t find one person that thinks this is a good move. Oh well. We’ll get to listen to more net radio from Pakistan and Korea, chock full of anti-American ads.

God, I miss the Dregs

This clip on YouTube brought back some great memories. I must have spent days and days practicing along on the drumkit (years and years ago) to Assembly Line (from Industry Standard), trying to pick up Rod Morgenstein’s techniques. That was one of the most fun songs to work on. That and Jeff Beck’s Space Boogie, from There and Back (Simon Phillips on drums).

Steve Morse’s guitar style is so crisp and clean. I wish I could get the stupid embed string to work in WordPress, but it blows up with errors. I’ve tried it in Code View and can’t figure out what’s blowing up, but it says “unterminated string constant”, even though all the tag values are matched up and closed properly. Oh well.
